Glenda moved in with us about a year ago. She came to live with us at the same time we bought a new car. We never thought we needed to provide a home for Glenda, but since she came with the car, what the heck? We could get used to her…although we didn’t see ourselves paying much attention to her.
We were wrong! Glenda has become a valued member of our family, and we wouldn’t think of venturing off into a new location without including her. She’s a lot more patient with us that we are with her. Sometimes we just plain disagree with her and strike out in our own direction, but before we know it we’re back to listening to her and being thankful she is there with us. It’s amazing how comfortable we’ve found ourselves to be with her.
It’s also amazing to me how knowledgeable Glenda is. She is current on all things related to travel, including detours, accidents ahead, and potential travel hazards. She has that women’s intuition we have always joked about…and most of the time she’s right. I hate to admit that, but it’s true.
Glenda has yet to figure out that we like to wander, and that we prefer to travel within sight of the ocean. It’s not always the most convenient route, and sometimes it adds miles and time to our trips, but it’s something that’s important to us. I’m not sure Glenda will ever perfect that aspect of our travel, but we can manage, using my wife’s uncanny ability to find directions and my uncharacteristic male willingness to ask for directions.
We haven’t yet found Glenda to be irritating or obnoxious. To the contrary, she has been patient, flexible, and even funny. She doesn’t intrude into our conversations, and if we happen to be listening to the Red Sox game, Prairie Home Companion, or NPR, she is gentle when she interrupts to tell us what we need to know. I don’t think she’s listening to our personal conversations. If she is, I’m sure she’ll keep our confidences.
Somebody told me that more than a year ago some people came into the area and scouted out potential homes for Glenda. They took pictures of the neighborhood and the city of Providence. They even scouted out potential areas where we might think about traveling. All of that information was fed into her memory. She has an incredible ability to recall the details. Obviously, Glenda is much younger than we are and has yet to experience senior moments. Thank Goodness. We don’t need someone like us acting as our guide and travel mentor.
We think Glenda is a keeper. Instead of being a silent member of the family relegated to obscurity in the back seat, she is a welcome addition to our empty nest household.

You’ve inspired me to name our GPS!! Let’s hear it for personification, projection, anthropomorphism, or whatever-we-want-to-call-it …
